The flame violet (Episcia cupreata) is a petite, fast-growing charmer. Its velvety leaves are copper-kissed and patterned, with deep purple undersides. The bright, trumpet-shaped flowers explode in shades of red, pink, and orange for a fleeting two to three days.

This sassy member of the African violet family thrives in bright, indirect light, well-drained soil, and high humidity. It hates wet leaves, so water moderately in summer and sparingly in winter. A year-round stunner, it blooms on and off throughout the year, with leaves that stop traffic even when it's not flowering.

Different cultivars sport different colors, and some can brave the sun and rain. But the more sensitive types demand red carpet treatment – no roughing it outdoors or in direct sunlight. If you're ready for a gorgeous, high-maintenance plant, the flame violet might be your perfect match. Just be prepared to give it the TLC it demands.
